Description: As well as having the largest Muslim population in the world, historically Asia is also home to a very special form of Islam, an Islam that is syncretic and that supports strongly the practice of religious tolerance and pluralism. The contemporary situation, starting several years ago, with issues such as radicalism that have clearly affected this region, is fascinating to consider from a broader perspective. This book, which grew out of a radio program called Asia Calling, is intended to encourage Muslims in Asia to get to know one another better and to learn from each other, particulary those living in Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Afghanistan and Indonesia, countries from which the speakers who participated in the radio program come. It paints a broad picture of several important issues, from the relationship between Islam and the nation state, to democracy and political participation, to radical Islam and terrorism, through to violence against women.
